In this segment, Allen and Dr. Melody are joined by Douglas Bodin to explore why  rehabilitation programs fail for the young adult (18 to 28), and the hard realities that need to be addressed at home in order to have any chance of long term success.

When parents are desperate, they will often turn to the most expedient solution, which often means the one that they’ve heard about the most and the one that promises the quickest return. One-month re-hab centers seem to fit the bill, especially when celebrities grab the headlines, and TV reality shows highlight these programs. But the sad truth is that their success rates are less than 8% for young adults (18 to 28). Patients relapse and return again and again to these programs as if they were caught in a revolving door.

There are two fundamental reasons for failure. The first is institutional: the typical re-hab center rarely addresses the host of factors that lead to addiction in the first place, such as mental health issues, developmental disorders, learning disabilities. The second is the home environment. Parents, driven by both hope and by fear, too often engage in co-dependent behavior with their son or daughter, reinforcing the very conditions, patterns and behaviors that must be changed to have any chance of long-term success.
