Read More About the Lindner Center of Hope

Dr. Melody discusses with Dr. Keck the fact that only 11% of young adults reach conventional markers of achievement by their 30s. These markers include leaving home and living independently, finishing school — college or even high school, entering the workforce, finding a partner in life, and having children.

Each of us knows someone between the ages of 18 and 34 (and increasingly older if problems are not accurately assessed and thoroughly addressed) who struggle with decision making, are unmotivated toward success, and just can’t seem to get their life on track. Perhaps they dropped out of high school, didn’t complete a college degree, can’t hold down a job, bounce from bad relationship to worse, or engage in high-risk behaviors.  Or if you don’t know someone personally, you might recognize the young celebrities in the media like Lindsay Lohan or Heath Ledger, perhaps most well-known for their roles in self-destruction in the public eye. Though seemingly more prevalent now than ever before, this issue is not new… In the 70s, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison all died at the age of 27 as a result of mood disorders and addiction .
