Scott Sowleby Allen Cardoza

Scott Sowle, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Newport Academy, discussed with Allen Cardoza and Dr. Melody Foxx on LA Talk Radio his adolescent substance abuse treatment at Newport Academy.

His family-based program seeks to identify and address the various roles each family member plays in balancing a system in a crisis. Identifying and addressing family roles helps the family members establish and pursue a path of healing and recovery.

In outlining Newport’s approach, Sowle delves into the need for therapy groups that are attended both with and without the adolescent. Private family sessions are provided throughout the week and on the weekends. These sessions address roles, rules, and interaction patterns common in substance-dependent families. They involve discussing common issues parents may bring to the table when addressing their own family of origin.

A highly-effective program for adolescent boys and girls, Newport Academy offers the following unique features and benefits to empower young people:

* Only 6 boys and 6 girls are admitted at any one time, and there are over 40 staff to provide care for these 12 residents.

* It provides each resident with a minimum of 6 hours of individual therapy and counseling per week, a minimum of 3 hours of family therapy per week, and 12 hours of group work and 12 hours of experiential work every week.

* The gender-specific treatment is recognized by the American Medical Association as a key element of effective adolescent treatment. Since, the males and females never mix while in treatment, residential treatment programs are conducted in different facilities.

* It is one of the most highly qualified and experienced staff in adolescent substance abuse and co-occurring disorder treatment.

Newport Academy has an Intensive Family Program. Families are involved in a comprehensive family program every week, and at week four, families participate in 2 days of an Intensive Family Program (IFP) on campus at Newport Academy. Only one family at a time participates in an IFP and it is customized for each family.
