Emotional distress has many causes and can be a normal reaction to pain, stress, major life changes, trauma and social isolation. Distress can’t simply be reduced to a biochemical imbalance. Mother Bear: Families for Mental Health helps individuals and families look beyond biology and include all of life to find real and lasting recovery.
Lisabeth Riis Cooper, the organization’s founder, shares with our audience unbiased evidence-based research on psychotropic medications including long-term studies have shown that people can and do recover from extreme emotional distress, often without the prolonged use of medications.
Lisabeth believes families and individuals should make informed choices about medication use or non-use to optimize health, personal recovery goals and quality of life.
ABOUT LISABETH RIIS COOPER
Lisbeth Riis Cooper is the chair and founding mother bear of Mother Bear: Families for Mental Health. Lisbeth spent many years trying to help her daughter find healing in a fragmented mental health care system that often treated her daughter as a diagnosis and a collection of symptoms rather than a person with unique strengths and potential.
Lisbeth realized she would have to create a community where individuals experiencing extreme emotional distress could find compassionate and effective support. With her husband Don’s help, they founded CooperRiis Healing Community (www.CooperRiis.org), where hope is nurtured and residents are empowered in recovery
