SPECIAL GUEST: Lon Woodbury

Allen, Dr. Melody and their guest, Lon Woodbury disccus how parents are increasingly taking charge of finding and arranging for payment of schools and programs designed to help children making poor decisions. This seems to be part of a wider movement of parents and citizens in general asserting themselves.
Parent Empowerment seems to be part of a wider general consumer revolt where authority is no longer given the extreme trust as in the past. Woodbury sees a similar “take charge” attitude in people’s individual dealings with medical doctors, the increase in the use of food supplements and alternative medicines, and even an increasing mistrust of large institutions (both government and business). In addition, there are increasing efforts along the same lines in public education, and there are increasingly individual interpretations of the bible and spirituality in general.
In public education, there are several attempts to reduce the exclusive power of authorities to make important decisions for parents. This includes Charter Schools, Vouchers, and the Parent Trigger Law in California and being considered in 20 other states, and home schooling. Computers also are allowing greater individualization of curriculum that are being taken advantage of by parents and students.
Woodbury also discusses the role educational consultants can play in helping helping parent find the right school or program that best fits the needs of the child and family. This includes screening all the hundreds of possibilities and screen out poor quality schools, and those that are currently having troubles and might close or be distracted from providing good quality and a safe environment for their students at that time. They also help the parents select those making the cut that seems to work best for their individual child, help them through the enrollment process and be on stand-by to help if the child has problems
