The University Neuropsychiatric Institute’s (UNI) Comprehensive Assessment and Treatment (CAT) program offers a four to six week, comprehensive clinical evaluation for ages 5-17 in a safe and secure environment.
According to our guests, Dr. Matthew Pierson & Dr. Amanda Stoeckel, the longer length of stay will help the treatment team provide an understanding of the patient and create a dynamic, individualized treatment plan that will facilitate the most appropriate match of community resources with the child/adolescent’s specific needs.
The treatment team, which includes a board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist, psychologist, social worker, expressive therapists, and nurses, will assess psychiatric and medical conditions, provide behavioral & educational assessments, psychological testing, therapy, and when necessary, address chemical dependency issues.
As our guests describe, the success of the program hinges on the focus, clarity and direction each individual case receives. Providing the stability of mental health care within the safe and secure environment of an inpatient hospital setting, combined with the challenging activities and daily contact and diagnostic clarification through an authentic, collaborative team approach results in a smooth transition on the journey toward wellness.
ABOUT DR. MATTHEW PIERSON
Dr. Matthew Pierson is a child and adolescent inpatient hospitalist at the University of Utah Neuropsychiatric Institute (UNI). He is also an Assistant Professor (Clinical) who earned his medical degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-Chapel Hill). He then completed psychiatry residency and child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at Duke University, where he served as chief resident during his fellowship training. While at Duke University, Dr. Pierson gave lectures to medical students, residents, and community clinicians on child and adolescent psychiatry. He remains active in teaching and supervising medical students and residents at the University of Utah. He is also a clinician and researcher in the Treatment-Resistant Mood Disorders clinic, where he performs Electroconvulsive Therapy, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, and ketamine infusions for severe mood disorders. Dr. Pierson is the co-medical director of the Comprehensive Assessment and Treatment Program at the University Neuropsychiatric Institute and is an active member of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
ABOUT DR. AMANDA STOECKEL
Dr. Amanda Stoeckel is a licensed psychologist and the Program Specialist for the Comprehensive Assessment and Treatment (CAT) Program at the University of Utah Neuropsychiatric Institute (UNI). She received her Ph.D. in School Psychology from the University of Northern Colorado and completed her clinical internship at UNI. Dr. Stoeckel completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the VA Advanced Fellowship Program in Mental Illness Research at the VISN 19 MIRECC VA Salt Lake City Health Care System. She has an adjunct faculty appointment at the University of Utah Department of Psychiatry. Her focus is providing psychological services to youth and young adults within the CAT Program, and she has extensive training in psychological assessment. Dr. Stoeckel’s therapeutic orientation is typically based on cognitive-behavioral methodology.
