Read More About Kasey Mathews & Preemie
Allen, Dr. Melody and Kasey Mathews discuss her riveting, honest, and often humorous memoir, PREEMIE which chronicles the journey of one tiny baby’s tenacious struggle to hold on to life and the mother who ultimately grows with her. From hospital waiting rooms to the offices of alternative practitioners, from ski slopes to Symphony Hall, Kasey tries to make meaning of her daughter’s birth and eventually comes to learn that gifts come in all sizes and all forms, and sometimes… right on time.
Kasey’s premature journey began in November of 2000 when she thought she had given birth to the smallest baby ever born. Her baby arrived four months prematurely, weighing one pound, eleven ounces. After her daughter was born, she longed for a compassionate woman who had been in my shoes to sit on the end of my bed and share her story with her. It wouldn’t matter how different or similar our stories were, just to have someone who understood what it felt like to know trauma.
That woman never arrived and Kasey was left lost, lonely and terribly wrought with guilt and fear. No one should have to feel so alone. If hearing her story allows you a moment away from your own, if it helps you understand what a friend, neighbor or family member is going through, if it leaves you with a sense of hope, then her story was worth writing down.”
